The easy way out isn’t always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal. I glanced through my cook book and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time. I started on it as soon as Doug left for work. As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn’t have to face Doug laughing at my work. I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing. Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in out rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the living thing was and why it was there. I don't know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing—Doug or me.

Good Communication for Making Friends
As a communication skills trainer, I've met a wide range of people. Some people have trouble associating with others and have difficulty making friends. So I would like to discuss two key points to making good friends. The first is to show respect and love for your friends through your words. Try to say things to others that would feel good to you if you heard them. For example, say things like, "Thanks for the great time" and "It was really nice to get to know you."If you are not good at speaking, then smiling and using body language to express your sincerity is also an effective way to communicate. Additionally, I recommend that when you meet someone new send them an e-mail or letter before the day is over to express how nice it was to meet them.
The goal of good communication is to reach another person's heart and form a comfortable relationship. It is, therefore, based the premise that you get rid of your worries and become a bright and positive person. When there is static noise over the phone line, you can't hear the other person clearly, right? In the same way, when your mind is full of worries and you try to communicate with another person, you cannot give or receive messages accurately. For example, let's say you are still tied to a past wound of being betrayed by a friend and feeling hurts .Even if you meet someone new and he or she tells you, "Let's be good friends," you may not be able to accept it because you will hear a negative inner voice saying something like "I
might be betrayed again" or "the person might have a hidden agenda."With this worry in your mind, you will not be able to make friends.
If you can be refreshed and get rid of your worries, you should be able to sense others' thoughts and feelings without prejudice and build a relationship of trust. If you really can't let go of your painful past experience, then try to change your perspective on the experience.
For example, try to think that it was a necessary lesson for you to understand others' pain. If you can think of the positive intention behind the event, then you will be able to view the experience favourably and feel better.
1） The main topic of the passage is________. ( )

D. All of the above
3） The effective way to communicate includes________.( )
A. showing respect and love for friends with words
B. smiling and using body language
C. sending an e-mail or letter
D. All of the above
4） Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? ()

① Life is full of difficulties and obstacles, from birth to death. At times, Life seems like a hurdle race. We are sure of encountering hurdles, but almost always we are taken by surprise. It is necessary to accept that life in general is full of difficulties and adversities. This recognition is the first step. When faced with problems, we often feel, "I am the only one having such problems" Or, we tend to exaggerate our problems and regard them as most complex, most painful，and as an extreme case. But if we look around us, we find people in much worse conditions. As St. Augustine said, "I cried for boots, till I saw a man who had no legs."
② When faced with difficulties, we either complain or seek to dodge them. We behave like as ostrich in the desert. It is said that when there is a storm in the desert, the ostrich buries his head in the sand-hoping that the storm will go away if he ignores it-and finally gets buried under a heap of sand and dies. Some of us choose to pretend that the problems do not exist. We fail to realize that confronting and solving the problem-no painful the process-makes us grow.
③ Accept the woes of birth. It has many implied meanings. First, it means "accepting," i.e., being able to say that it is "my" problem and it is up to me to solve it. Many times we find ourselves putting the blame on others-parents, society or the circumstances of life. Nothing happens by chance, but all is the result of our past actions. There are times when what is needed is patience. We seek to come out of an unpleasant situation quickly. We must understand that if the cause had been operating for a long time, the effect also would last long-as even when the gas has been turned off, the burner remains hot for a long time. Similarly, we expect quick results; having put in the effort, we must be willing to wait. Patient acceptance of what is due to us makes us makes us take a step further in our development.
④ Once we have learnt to deal with a difficulty, the next time we encounter it, it ceases to be a difficulty. But, more often than not the cause of the problem is internal, i.e., within us, and often, it calls for a change. Often the difficulty is solved when we are willing to change—our way of thinking, our feelings, our likes and dislikes—and ready to adapt or adjust ourselves to a problematic situation or a person in life. We must realize that realize that change is inevitable, and always be mentally prepared for it.
⑤ Not all life's problems are such that they need to be dealt with all at once. Sometimes it is possible to take a step and wait for a long time. For instance, if the tap is leaking then we need to call a plumber as soon as we can. But having called him and having found that he can come only the following morning, we should wait patiently for the next 24 hours. In this period, people can get very anxious and go on talking about it to others. There are many such problems in life.
A. There are implied meanings about the accepting the woes of birth.
B. Diligence is also very important in solving problems.
C. The first step of overcoming obstacles is to accept that life is full of difficulties.
D. Some problems can’t be solved all at once.
E. We must realize that change is inevitable.
F. Confronting and solving the problem makes us grow.
6. It's of great necessity to accept that life in general is full of__________.
7. Faced with difficulties, people either complain or___________.
8. We often put our problems____________.
9. Sometimes problems do need taking a step and __________.
10. While waiting for a long time，people tend to become______.
A. seek to dodge them
B. immediate reaction

You can look at that hurdle in two ways: "I can’t make it over, I’m too tired" or "I am one more hurdle closer to finishing this race". This is an example of taking a negative situation and seeing something positive in it.
The next part of the race is every hurdle between the first and last one. __2__ This happens a lot in life too. There may be a situation that arises where you feel as though you can’t make it and all you can think about is giving up. You may fall over that "hurdle" or struggle getting over it, but somehow you find it in yourself to jump over it and move on with the race.
Next is that last 100m of the race. You feel as though you just want to say, "No I can't do this." __3__
Now lastly is the last hurdle. This hurdle is the toughest out of all of them. In life we find ourselves falling and falling, and maybe getting too lost in our problems that we fell like have been though enough and there’s no hope. __4__ It's one step close to the end of the race.
Once you finish, you look back on it and you realize that you made it not by leaping, but step by step. "Yard by yard, life is very hard. But inch by inch, life can be a cinch."___5___

【答案解析】 上文提到当我们来到最后100米跨栏时，我们想说“不，我做不到。”与上段一样，作者先提出困难然后指出应该克服困难。因此应填入表示克服困难的句子。选项B中的you can do it... you must finish the race…符合此意，并与上句的“I can't do this”相对应。答案为B。

When I worked for the company I made pretty good money and got pretty good hours, but I would always find things to ___8___ about. I complained about things that did not really ___9___ when I should have been more thankful that I still had a job. When it comes to our finances, each of us has our own individual approach. Some of us are savers, some are spenders, and others are some-where in between. This continuum is a paradigm that our popular culture uses to frame differences in the way people approach money.
I believe that the way we approach our finances goes beyond that particular behavioral characteristic. In reality, I think our approach to finances can be viewed in more of a multi-dimensional setting, where money has a different role in our lives. For some, money means survival, plain and simple. For others, money is something that is a part of their lives but rarely on their mind, regardless of the role it actually plays. For yet others, money is an obsession, as accumulation indicates achievement. Some people view money as a defensive resource to protect against future setbacks. Some people want money to provide a good home, to contribute to the ability to have certain hobbies, or to provide something to future generations and so on. Sometimes the same person may view money differently in different situations. The bottom line is that we each have our own relationship with money, and our own conscious and subconscious needs for money, rooted in our value systems.
This is an area of personal finance that has interested me for a while. Why do people behave the way they do with respect to their money? What's driving this behavior? Of course, a starting point for anybody is to consider how you personally view things. Taking an introspective approach，I have spent time figuring out my own take on money，and the role it plays in my life. What I have determined is that for me，it fits into a framework that includes the following elements：health, wealth, and relationships. These are linked together as a part of a system. They're all connected, and to the extent one is strengthened, the others will be strengthened as well. If one is weakened, the others will be weakened as well. So to me, money is a part of the wealth aspect of HWR. Beyond basic survival, money gives you the opportunity to live a healthier life, with the time and means to have more positive relationships. One thing I want to make clear is that I am not saying that money buys friends. Well, it could, but those aren't true friends. What I am saying is that the more money you have ,on balance, the less stressed you are about it, and the more time you have to do other things, such as cultivate true, genuine relationships that aren’t based on money. Money is but a component in the system.

Green transportation choices provide you with the keys to the kingdom as you travel. You can walk off the calories of that buttery croissant as you explore Paris. Or better understand Chinese culture as you park your Flying Pigeon bicycle amid 100 others in a Beijing parking lot dedicated just to bikes. A marine ferry takes longer than an airplane to get you to Alaska, Mykonos or Nova Scotia, but you have a good chance of seeing dolphins and eagles, reading a book or two and chatting with the crew. You'll save money, your waistline and fossil fuel emissions by taking the greener road.
Get out of the car and walk once you arrive. The very greenest transportation choices are the non-motorized ones-bicycling and walking. Fortunately, both are also the best way to see a city. Pack comfortable shoes so you can explore without foot fatigue.
See if your lodging provides free bicycles for guests, recommends Irene Lane of Greenloons, a company that advises families on ecotourism travel choices. If not, rent a bicycle from a shop: many carry electric bikes that'll help you tackle hills or long rides even if you're not in top biking shape. In addition, see if your destination has a bike-sharing system that's accessible to tourists. For a small fee, these sharing systems allow you to pick up a bicycle from a nearby bike station, ride it to your heart's content for an hour or two, then return it to any other bike station in the city.
Take public transit once you arrive at your destination—most major transit systems now post maps and schedules online on multilingual sites, allowing you to familiarize yourself with the system in advance. In addition, some systems have applications for smart phones so you can get up-to-date information as you travel.
Move between cities using buses, trains and ferries, which tend to be greener than automobiles and airplanes—buses are considered more efficient than cars because their emissions are shared by several dozen people. If you have to fly or drive to get where you're going, take the most direct route and see if you can go green by proceeding on foot or bicycle once you arrive.
Rent an electric car if you must travel by vehicle and focus on green driving behaviors. Plan an efficient route, inflate your tires properly and remove unnecessary cargo to improve fuel efficiency and reduce the vehicle's carbon dioxide emissions.

American lunch hour is usually from noon until one o'clock or from one until two. People at work or school rarely go home for lunch. Instead, many bring lunch with them from home. For this purpose they need a meal that is small, portable, and does not require constant refrigeration. The sandwich meets all these three requirements.
When it comes to talking about the sandwich, Americans can offer you a long list of its names: a submarine sandwich, a hero, a hoagie, a grinder, a pool boy, a torpedo, a club sandwich and an open sandwich. Whatever you call it, this concoction (混合) of cold cuts in a roll is as American as the hot dog or the apple pie. In attempting to track down its origin, it is found that several U.S. cities claim to be its birthplace—New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, and Chester. A strong possibility is the simultaneous, independent invention of all these cities. Whatever it started, the sandwich was clearly an innovation of the Italian immigrants, In their old country, Italian workers had gone home at midday for their lunch; since U.S. factory owners frowned on this practice, they adopted the roll as a kind of lunchbox and put their meat and cheese within. In this way, an inexpensive yet filling meal could be carried to the workplace without damage. Hence we can see the sandwich as a compromise between the Old World attachment to sausages and cheese, and the need in the American workday context.
The sandwich remained largely a working-class item from its beginning in the 1580s. Then during the Depression the financially suffered middle class realized its value as an economical meal and transformed it into an American staple （生活必需品）.
1） The passage offers a long list of the sandwich's names to give readers an impression that ________.（ ）

D. restaurant cooks

4） It can be concluded from the passage that ________.（ ）
A. the sandwich is a gift from the New World to the Old World
B. the sandwich is a gift from the Old World to the New World
C. the sandwich is a compromise between the Old World and the New World
D. the sandwich is mainly popular among Italian immigrants in America
【答案解析】 第二段最后一句Hence we can see the sandwich as a compromise between Old World attachment to sausages and cheese给出了答案。compromise，n.折中物、产物。答案为C。
5） The most important feature of the sandwich as lunch is ________.（ ）
D. free from disease germs
【答案解析】 可以用排除法，首先排除文章没有涉及的选项A（有营养）和D（卫生）。第一段作者介绍三明治的特点时，用到了portable（可携带）；在第二段讲述三明治发明过程时，用了could be carried to the workplace without damage。由此看出，三明治的最大特点是便于携带。答案为C。
① Itzhak Perlman is considered one of the most gifted violinists in the world, a person with extraordinary talent who has persevered in spite of life-altering limitations. Born in Tel Aviv, Palestine in 1945, Perlman was stricken with the life-threatening polio virus at the age of four. Though he eventually learned to walk with crutches, the virus sadly and permanently damaged his legs, and to this day, he performs seated as a soloist, which is unusual. Nevertheless, Perlman was already beginning to play the violin, which in past interviews he has stated he was strongly encouraged to play in order to improve mobility in his fingers after his bout with polio.
② This encouragement clearly worked on what was probably a natural talent in any case. After first studying at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv, he came to the United States, and by age 13, he'd had his first nationally televised performance on the Ed Sullivan Show. He continued studying at the New York—based Julliard School of Music, and in 1964, Itzhak Perlman won the highly competitive Levintritt Competition. This award made him internationally noticed and he began what has been a nonstop career of performance in orchestras throughout the world.
③ The career of Itzhak Perlman can be said to have had both highlights and higher lights. He seems continually to build on past successes, and continues to win new fans, multiple awards, and critical acclaim. Some of his most notable career moves include joining the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in 1987. The orchestra toured, for the first time, several Eastern bloc countries, culminating with a performance in the Soviet Union in 1990. Perlman later went back to the Soviet Union in the same year to participate in a concert, which honored the birth of Tchaikovsky, and performed with other famous musicians, such as Yo-Yo Ma and Jessye Norman.
④ Recordings of the work of Itzhak Perlman abound and have gained him several Emmys and numerous Grammys. Perlman has also been honored with several prestigious awards from the United States. In 1986, Ronald Reagan gifted Perlman with the Medal of Freedom, and in 2000 Perlman earned the National Medal of Arts. Perlman has also been known for his collaborative efforts with some of today’s most noted film composers, such as John Williams. More recently, Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma had featured solo performances on the soundtrack of Memoirs of a Geisha.
⑤ As one of the world's best violinists, it's fitting that Itzhak Perlman performs on two of the world's best violins. However it would be wrong to label this musician as only a violinist. He's also a charming speaker who has delighted guests with his fine sense of humor in guest appearances on television and in his hosting of the popular PBS program The Three Tenors. He's dedicated in his support of public people into making donation. In recent years, Perlman has begun to focus on conducting, and was appointed the Westchester Philharmonic principle conductor in 2007. He also continues his goal of delighting and educating people with music.

Teaching Children to Spend Pocket Money Wisely
School-going children need pocket money for food, stationery and bus fares. Parents give pocket money to their children in different ways. Some give a lump sum at the beginning of a month or a week. ____1____ The way in which pocket money is given affects how money is spent or saved. On the other hand, the children's spending habits may affect how pocket money is given.
Pocket money given on a daily basis is sometimes termed as "food money". ____2____ They learn how to manage small sums of money. As the money is limited, they have to control their spending. Some parents choose this method of allocating pocket money in order to prevent their children from overspending, hoping that in time they can be trusted with larger sums of money. ____3____
Giving pocket money on a daily basis places responsibilities of budgeting on the parents, instead of the child. The child may spend every single cent of the daily pocket money by overindulging in junk food, as they know they will get another sum of money the next day. This results in children being short-sighted in their spending. ____4____ They may develop the mentality that money is meant to be spent. Others spend more than they are given. They borrow from their siblings or their classmates when they feel like indulging themselves. Then they may ask for money to pay off their debts. This habit of borrowing causes them to depend on others to solve their problems. ____5____
A. There is no better way to teach children to manage money than to start with their pocket money.
B. The thought of saving money never crossed their minds.
C. Children usually use the pocket money to buy food during recess and also at lunch hour if they have school activities in the afternoon.
D. Others prefer to give pocket money on a daily basis.
E. Parents who earn daily wages may also opt for this due to financial constraints.
F. In such instances, the purpose of rationing is defeated.
【答案解析】 本空应填入对上一句“food money”的解释。选项C符合此意。答案为C。
